Pregnancy brings in many changes in the body of a woman. Yeast infection is one such problem that pregnant women face. Also known as monilial vaginitis or vaginal candidiasis, this infection is caused by a microorganism known as Candida albican.
Even in normal conditions, women have yeast in their vagina and intestinal tract. But during pregnancy the growth rate increases drastically creating discomfort. Production of yeast is due to the high level of estrogen hormone in the body which cause increase in glycogen in vagina causing the growth of yeast.
It is also possible to get yeast infection due to intake of antibiotics for a long time. This is because the antibiotics kill the protective bacteria in the vagina, allowing the growth of yeast.
Signs of yeast infection
If the yeast infection is not controlled in the right time then it may cause various vaginal problems. Some signs of yeast infection are:
- Itchiness, soreness, burning and swelling in vagina.
- White and creamy discharge from the vagina.
- Discomfort during sex.
- Burning sensation during urination.
It is important to contact the doctor, as soon as you detect any of the above signs. The doctor will check the vaginal discharge and find the cause of these symptoms. Many antifungal medications are available in the market. However, un-prescribed medicines should never be taken for cure. As some of these medications may cause harm to the unborn baby. Antifungal vaginal creams are available that are considered safe during pregnancy. Creams containing clotrimazole are mostly preferred for better treatment.
Creams are inserted into the vagina for a period of seven days or less. Some antifungal creams are applied just outside the vagina for safety. It takes few days to get relief from such condition. The itching can be soothed by applying ice packs on the infected area.
It is important to know that such infections do not have any effect on the baby during pregnancy. However, if the infection in present during delivery then the newborn can come in contact with it and develop the same infection. Such infection appears on the mouth of the newborn and is known as thrush. Thrush develops white patches on the sides of mouth and tongue.
