Music makes life beautiful. Music plays an important role in everyone’s life. It brings in happiness and helps relax from the daily stress. The same applies for unborn babies developing in the womb of mothers. Studies have shown that fetuses can hear and react to sound by certain movements. However, no scientific proof of this study is present. Researchers are still working in this field to find proper evidence.
Often it is said that music makes the baby smarter. But no relevant studies are yet present to prove it. There is potential of better brain development in exposure of music in children. Like it is seen in children aged 3-4 show good understanding and reasoning skills when piano lessons are given; such effect may be applicable for unborn babies as well.
Some people say that the newborns even recognize the music played by their parents when they were in the womb fall asleep to it after birth. Some also state that the fetus breathing pattern synchronizes with the music played outside. According to an observation made by a California obstetrician, the fetus breathing pattern followed the rhythm of Beethoven’s fifth symphony which was played outside.
The best way to play music for your baby is by arranging a stereo and play songs in the day. It is not recommended to put headphones on the belly as it may cause overstimulation. Some people think it’s hard for the outside music to reach the baby. However, the amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus is a very good conductor of sound and any such problem will not arise.
The babies should not be exposed to loud music. Several studies have shown that long exposure to loud music can cause problems in the developing fetus. It creates the chances of having lower birth weight, and hearing loss during birth. It is better to keep the music level lower than 50dB. The pregnancy care centers make sure that the decibel level of music played there is lower than this.
Occasional exposure of loud music does not cause any trouble. A rock concert, once in a while, will not harm the baby. Similarly going to movies at times won’t really develop any negative effect.
Especially classical music has soothing effect on baby. A great part of the classical music is Mozart music. His music can bring calmness and relaxation instantly. Some university studies show that Mozart music has the potential of temporarily increasing intelligence. The effect is called the Mozart effect. However, there is no scientific proof for the same. The prenatal care centers still play classical Mozart music as it holds the potential of bringing goodness in the unborn.
Listening to music can also help the mother. A mother has to go through a lot during the phase of pregnancy. During the complex emotional and physical state of pregnancy, music can bring peace to the pregnant mother. Music can help battle depression and mood swings that are commonly seen in pregnant women. When the mother relaxes, the fetus automatically shows good growth and development.
