Eating healthy is an important aspect to have a safe pregnancy period. Keeping a close look at the food intake is essential for the proper development of both mother and the baby inside. Adequate amounts of food components should be taken. One should also keep a check on of the quantity and quality of food consumed. Vitamins are required in low quantity by our bodies, but their intake becomes very crucial during the time of pregnancy.
During pregnancy, some vitamins supplements are needed to be taken. However, there are some vitamins whose loaded intake should be avoided. Some recommended vitamins required by pregnant women are:
- 10mg of vitamin D regularly during pregnancy and even during breastfeed period.
- 400mg of vitamin B (folic acid) during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
Vitamin A supplements should not be taken as it may cause harm to the baby. The above mentioned supplements can be found in all pharmaceutical stores easily. However, do make sure that the tablets do not contain any vitamin A.
Folic acid during Pregnancy
Folic acid is important for the unborn babies as it prevents the baby from neural tube defects like spina bifida. This is the reason why folic acid supplements should be taken during pregnancy. Along with the supplements, you should also eat foods that contain the vitamin. Some food materials that contain the vitamin are vegetables, brown rice, some cereals and some fat spreads like margarine. However, only taking food with folate is not sufficient, therefore supplements should be taken.
Some babies are at higher risk of obtaining the neural tube defects compared to others. Such pregnant women should take higher dose of folic acid supplements. The women with increased risk are:
- The women themselves or their husband has the neural tube defect.
- Their previous baby was affected by neural tube defects.
- Someone in their close relative has the problem.
- They have family history of diabetes.

Vitamin D during pregnancy:
Vitamin D is required for healthy teeth and bones. You should take adequate amount of vitamin D for the proper development of the baby. Vitamin D should be taken during pregnancy and also during breastfeed. Children not having enough vitamin D develop rickets.
Some food containing vitamin D for natural intake of the vitamin is fishes, eggs and meats. Some cereals, soya products and dairy products also contain vitamin D. Our body also makes vitamin D under the exposure of sunlight. The amount of vitamin D produced depends on the time of exposure and also different in every person. However, during pregnancy sunbathe is not recommended as the UV rays may cause harm to the unborn.
Vitamin C during pregnancy:
Vitamin C is required for the protection of help and to keep them healthy. Vitamin C can be obtained from fruits and vegetables like broccoli, citrus fruits, blackcurrants etc. Including these food in diet is sufficient during pregnancy.
